The Deep End.

We’ve all been there. Sometimes we know it’s coming, other times we are just walking along the shallow end when one foot slips and the next thing we know we are struggling to stay above water. Doesn’t motherhood feel like this at times? One day I feel like a rock star mom, the next minute i’m wondering how many days it’s ok for my boys to wear the same pair of pajamas because it’s literally the only clean thing in the house. (Sorry mom) Why does it seem to take the tiniest thing going wrong to send us to the deep end? The deep end can be a lonely place to be. It’s easy to feel defeated, hopeless and overwhelmed during motherhood. That’s why it’s so important that we lift each other up. Encourage each other along. I remember once, shortly after I had my first born Griffen (who’s 5 now)… I was at the pool with a friend of mine, Mandy. Griffen was fussing and I got up and moved him to a different position which somehow worked and he stopped crying. Mandy looked at me and said something along the lines of “Wow, you knew exactly what he needed. You’re such a great mom!” Ya’ll… that tiny comment was 5 years ago, and I don’t think i’ll ever forget it. Sometimes that’s all it takes. Affirmation. The truth is that I was just guessing. I just kind of mindlessly moved him and hoped for the best. But after Mandy’s comment I believed her. It really lifted my spirit and I just felt more confident. Wouldn’t it be awesome if you could be someone’s Mandy? I wish I could say Mandy’s comment brought me a confidence that never left, but, as moms we need encouragement daily. Sometimes you’ll have a Mandy, other days you’ll be a Mandy. Think about the difference it makes when you get in the deep end of a pool with a child and encourage them to swim, telling them they can do it! Sometimes all it takes for someone to be able to breath is knowing you’re there with them. Watch for moments to encourage someone in the deep end, and when you’re in the deep end… look around. You’re not alone.

Here’s what the bible says about encouraging others…

1 Thessalonians 5:11 “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.”

Hebrews 10:24 “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds”

Galatians 6:2 ” Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ”

Encourage. Build up. Spur one another on. Carry the burden.

  1. I love this post! Thanks for the reminder that our words are powerful and can mean the world to someone who may be struggling.

  2. I laughed at the (sorry mom). It’s good to remind those of us who aren’t ” rich” with the gift of mercy(sorry daughter) , to be an encourager.

  3. Cris I love how you brought the story back to scripture! God’s word never returns void. It is powerful! It’s able to heal. All Mommas have been in the deep end. I hope we can all encourage one another in those times because you are right-we need one another.
